                                                        CHANGE IS PART OF LIFE
1. When there is a lot of change all around us, we can feel upset and worried. Change can be hard. We often want things to stay the same because that makes us feel safe. We need to remember that change is part of life and that we have coped with it before! We can’t stop things changing, but we can learn to cope – we can be brave, even if we are afraid! Now think back on times when you coped well with a change before – something that you weren’t looking forward to or were worried about. Draw a picture of one of these times and write about what happened. Maybe something good that you weren’t expecting came out of this change! (Weaving well being at home)
                                                                            BEING BRAVE
2. Sometimes we need to be brave, especially when we have to face a challenge or do something that we are afraid to do! Think back on all of the times when you were brave in the past. Maybe you were scared or nervous, but you didn’t let that stop you! You probably felt really proud of yourself afterwards.

WORRIES – Weaving wellbeing at home.

If you are someone who worries a lot about things, you’re not alone! Lots of kids worry – it means that our brains are trying to help us to prepare for things that might (or might not!) happen in the future! We need to have ways to deal with our worries so that they don’t take up too much of our time and stop us from enjoying life!

Read and discuss these ways to deal with your worries – Can you think of something for number 7?

RAINBOW BREATHING
We can help our bodies and minds to feel calm and relaxed by doing Rainbow Breathing any time we need to! Try it now.
You might like to relax by lying on the floor, but you can do it sitting or standing either.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Now breathe in deeply and imagine lots of beautiful red light surrounding you, filling up your lungs and going right down into your toes.
  • Now breathe out slowly and send this beautiful bright red light from your lungs, letting it take all of your worries away with it.
  • Do the same with each of the other colours of the rainbow – orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Imagine your body becoming soft, warm and relaxed as you do this. Repeat this a few times until you start to feel relaxed and calm.

Project time - SPACE!

  • Over the next couple of weeks, research and create a project on ‘Space’. Create a small booklet or use some A3 pages. Include pictures and clear headings. Alternatively create your own powerpoint or video on the topic. Choose a project format that suits you and which will show all your new learning.
Some topics you might include in your project: our solar system, sun and star constellations, the planets, asteroid belt, comets, meteors, international space station, the Hubble telescope, gravity etc
Maybe include a History section on ‘The Race to Space’ and space exploration?

I look forward to reading your work!

Writing a book review - TOP TIPS!
    1.
Start with a couple of sentences describing what the book is about - But without giving any spoilers or revealing plot twists! As a general rule, try to avoid writing in detail about anything that happens from about the middle of the book onwards..
    2. Discuss what you particularly liked about the book
Focus on your thoughts and feelings about the story and the way it was told. You could try answering a couple of the following questions:
Who was your favourite character, and why? Did the characters feel real to you? Did the story keep you guessing? What was your favourite part of the book, and why? Were certain types of scene written particularly well - for example sad scenes, tense scenes, mysterious ones...? Did the book make you laugh or cry? Did the story grip you and keep you turning the pages?
    3. Mention anything you disliked about the book
Talk about why you think it didn't work for you. For example:
Did you wish the ending had been different? Did you find it difficult to care about a main character, and could you work out why? Was the story too scary /sad/ realistic for your liking, or did it focus on a theme you didn't find interesting?
    4. Round up your review
Summarise some of your thoughts on the book by suggesting the type of reader you'd recommend the book to.
    5. You can give the book a rating, for example a mark out of five or ten, if you like!

5th & 6th classes - Scroll down for work for the week starting Monday 20th April, 2020.

Remember - Every house and pupil is different, so do what you can. Please let me know how you are getting on and if you need any support.

    Dear families,
I hope this email finds you and your loved ones all well and healthy and I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday. In normal years, school would be opening tomorrow and so I send some work for this week. I am very aware that every house and every child is different. Please do what you can. I have included as many links and videos as possible to help along the way and I have tried to explain the activity as clearly as possible. I have also allocated some work for various subjects.
Every house is different in how they are approaching ‘learning from home’. There is already so much important learning happening already in houses and on farms.
As teachers, we have been asked by the Dept to help and continue to provide work for home-learning activities. This is new to us as well as we endeavour to find effective ways to support learning from home. How this actually works will vary from house to house. Some families may prefer to allocate some time every morning to school activities and then leave for the rest of the day. Other families / pupils may prefer to break it into smaller timeslots throughout the day.                      It might be an idea to assign approx. 20 min slot each day to Irish, English and Maths activities and then look at one other subject / activity each day? I am very conscious that many parents are working from home, so really it is whatever works best for you and your family.
Below are some activities to provide some continuity for the week starting 20th April. I have tried to keep continuity with some programmes as well as including some hands-on, active work as well.
Please don’t let this work add to any worries in the house. I will try to contact each family over the next week to see how things are going and if I can help further in any way. I am also working from home and will continue to give feedback and support as much as possible.

    Stay safe,
    Melanie
