Brief History
Kilcommon Church of Ireland National School began as a one-teacher school. The original school was located in the square in the village.
In 1955 a new school was erected on the present site, still as a one-teacher school.
In 1973 both Moyne and Coolroe schools were amalgamated with Kilcommon NS thus arising the need for a second classroom. The current Junior classroom is the original classroom providing space for up to 24 pupils. The Senior room was added later providing room for 35 pupils. The site itself had been donated by Mr Weir.
In 1992 it was decided that an assembly hall/ games room would be of great benefit to the school and thus a fundraising target of £30,000 was set. Building began in June 1994.
Mrs Weir retired in 1990 and Ms Aileen Tyner replaced her as the teacher in the Senior room. Mrs Martin retired in 1992 and Ms Aileen Tyner became Principal. In 1992 Mr Niall West became Assistant Teacher.
In 1998 Mr Niall West left Kilcommon NS and Mrs Melanie Hadden became Assistant Teacher. When Ms Aileen Tyner left Kilcommon in 2002, Mrs Melanie Hadden became Principal. Ms Ann Finlay was appointed to the position of Vice-Principal in 2002.
In September 2003 Kilcommon National School was approved a third teacher due to increasing numbers. Mrs Joanne Katus was appointed to this position.
The school was approved a grant to build a prefab. This money, however, was used in the building of a new classroom, resource room and disabled bathroom in 2004. The total cost of this extension was €98,000. Fundraising covered all additional costs.
Due to a stipulation of planning permission for the extension, the school wall at the front of the school was moved, resulting in an inadequate sized playground. Major fundraising was carried out to provide a new hardcore playground in the summer of 2005. A further grant was received, as part of the summer works scheme, towards the replacement of toilets. This was carried out in August 2005.
In August 2006 a Whole School Evaluation was carried out by the Department of Education. This is available on the Department of Education website.
In August 2006 the playground was marked out for a tennis/basketball court along with hopscotch and number lines etc. The school also received a donation from Kilpipe Parish (from the sale of the old Erasmus Smith school) to help cover final costs of the new building and playground. The new classroom, named The Erasmus Smith Wing, was officially opened in June 2007.
In Spring 2009, the electrical works of the school were updated, having received a Summer Works Grant from the Department of Education. The school was also fitted with both security and fire alarms.
Interactive Whiteboards were then introduced into all three classrooms along with classroom computers and laptops.
2010 saw the old troublesome flat roof of the school replace with a new A-roof. This area also provided the school with much-needed storage space and a potential classroom. A new stairs was built to provide safe access to this upstairs area and an upstairs resource teaching room was completed.
A 4th classroom teacher, Ms. Rachel Stanley, was appointed to the school in September 2012 and the school received a further grant to build a new classroom at ground level. This work began in January 2013.
A new school office was completed upstairs, leaving the original downstairs office as a staff-room. A resource room was also completed.
In September 2017 another room upstairs was completed for use as a classroom.
SET(Special Education Teacher) added to staff numbers.
